Thousands of young people from Austria are taking part in another festive marathon over the Whitsun weekend in Lignano (Italy) after a two-year Corona break. “Tutto Gas” is making a comeback. The police prepare for the attack.
Due to the Covid pandemic, Pentecost in Lignano has been quiet for the past two years. That will change this year: 80,000 guests are expected on the home beach of the Austrians. Among them not only Italians, who celebrate the national holiday on June 2 in the popular holiday resort, but also countless Germans and Austrians “Tutto Gas” on the weekend.
Tourism expert Giorgio Ardito also knows this: “It has been a tradition for years that young people come to celebrate the beginning of summer!” One of the hotspots is the Aurora Bistrò right on the beach in the Sabbiadoro district. The city center is also transformed into a party mile. “Basically, the curfew is at midnight,” explains Martin Manera, president of Lignano Holiday. However, certain bars and pubs are allowed to open and serve alcohol until 3am at the latest. “Discotheques that are not in the center are open even longer!”
“We do not tolerate excessive alcohol consumption”
Young people partying in Lignano is no problem, they are even welcome, says Martin Manera. “Excessive drinking and exaggerations will not be tolerated!” Italian police will keep a close eye on the situation as parties occasionally escalated in recent years. In 2019, during the “SpringBreak” weekend, not only were there 15 reports of drunken riots, but four young Austrians were banned from Lignano for two or three years for criminal offences.
In order to avoid misunderstandings due to the language barrier, police officers from Austria will also be present at the “Adria-Ballermann”. “We are looking forward to our holiday,” says Johanna, a student from Carinthia. At Pentecost she goes to Italy for the first time with five friends: “We expect a lot of fun. For the exam phase at university, that’s just part of it.”
No trace of the corona virus in Italy
Italy also relaxed the corona accession rules just in time. Since June 1, there is no longer any obligation to provide proof, registration or quarantine. And generally there are no more guidelines: no masks, no 3G proof.
Good weather
The weather is also favorable for the holidaymakers in Italy. Hot summer days with 30 degrees await in Lignano, according to UBIMET meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann, the chance of thunderstorms will only increase on Monday afternoon.
