Pro-Ukrainian forces announce attacks on major Russian cities

Date:

Pro-Ukrainian fighters have announced attacks on two major cities in Russia’s border region. On Wednesday, they called on residents of Belgorod and Kursk to “leave the cities immediately.”

“We are forced to attack the military bases in Belgorod and Kursk,” the militants said on Telegram. “To avoid civilian casualties, we call on everyone to leave the cities immediately.” Kremlin opponents from Russia have joined forces in the pro-Ukrainian volunteer militias.

As reported, they had already entered the Russian border areas on Tuesday (see video above). According to their own statements, they had taken control of a town near the border. The Russian side has already confirmed the attacks. On Tuesday evening, the Defense Ministry said there had been retaliation.

More and more attacks on the border area
The Ukrainian army, which is under heavy pressure on the domestic front, has stepped up attacks on Russian territory in recent months, with a particular emphasis on the border areas. On Wednesday evening, Russian forces intercepted and destroyed a total of 58 Ukrainian drones. This also included the administrative regions of Belgorod and Kursk. About 45,000 people would have no electricity there. The building of the Russian domestic secret service FSB was also hit.

Air warning around Saint Petersburg
Air warnings were also issued in the Leningrad area around the megacity of St. Petersburg. There were initially no injuries. Russian leader Vladimir Putin sees the recent attacks on Russian regions as an attempt to disrupt the upcoming presidential elections in Russia.

“The main goal, I have no doubt, is to interfere in some way, if not with the presidential elections in Russia, then at least with the normal process of expressing the will of citizens,” he said. It is expected that Putin will be re-elected in the elections (March 15 to 17); strong competition was not even allowed.
