The EU wants to work more closely together to collect fines for traffic violations. The European Parliament announced on Wednesday evening that approximately 40 percent of cross-border violations are currently not punished.
Therefore, negotiators from Parliament and EU countries agreed to strengthen administrative assistance procedures between countries. The agreement still needs to be officially approved by parliament and national ministers.
The fine must be higher than 70 euros
Specifically, the agreement stipulates that authorities in the home country of traffic offenders will in the future be able to collect fines and fines imposed in other countries. The condition is that the state in which the criminal offense was committed requires that the penalty be more than 70 euros and that all other legal options have already been exhausted. Private companies should be prohibited from collecting fines from foreigners.
Illegal parking is also in the spotlight
In addition, according to both institutions, a list will be expanded to include traffic violations that give rise to cross-border procedures and can lead to fines for dangerous driving behavior. In addition to misbehavior such as speeding or drink driving, such offenses also include dangerous parking and dangerous overtaking, as well as hit and run and ignoring solid lines.
Once EU countries and Parliament have approved the agreement, the new requirements still need to be implemented into national law. A transition period of 30 months is provided for this. Work is currently underway at EU level to ensure that driving bans and driving license withdrawals are enforced across the EU. Negotiations on this project are still ongoing.
