Fatal traffic accident on Wednesday in the early morning hours on the Fernpasweg in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern: a Dutchman drove his van into the oncoming lane and collided with a small truck. The 61-year-old was trapped in the wreckage and had to be freed by the fire brigade.
The accident happened shortly before 4:30 am. The 61-year-old Dutchman was driving the van on the B179 from Reutte towards Innsbruck when, for an unknown reason, he crossed the opposite lane near Heiterwang. There he collided with an oncoming small truck at full speed.
Freed with the help of rescue scissors
„The Dutchman was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by the Heiterwang volunteer fire brigade with rescue scissors,” the police said. The driver suffered significant injuries.
After initial treatment at the scene of the accident, he was taken by ambulance to the Reutte Hospital.
The driver of the small truck, a 36-year-old Romanian, escaped unharmed. The B179 Fernpassstraße was closed to all traffic in the vicinity of the accident site for about an hour and a half. A local diversion has been set up.
