More than 50,000 euros! – Fake police officer defrauded pensioner Graz

Date:

Once again fraudsters posed as fake police officers – and once again a pensioner was hit. On Tuesday afternoon they asked the 73-year-old to hand over a large amount of money as a so-called deposit at a parking lot in the Gries district of Graz.

“A close family member is involved in a traffic accident.” For example, the fraudsters from Graz spoke on the telephone with the 73-year-old pensioner, who then allegedly took more than 50,000 euros from her. “The person is in custody. You have to post bail,” the fake police officer told her in broken German.

Convinced with ten phone calls
Then a woman spoke up. She posed as a prosecutor from the Graz-West court and emphasized the man’s demands. There were a total of ten calls made to a suppressed number before they were able to convince the woman to hand over the alleged bail money.

The 73-year-old collected the requested amount of money. On Tuesday afternoon around 3 p.m., they met at a Hofer parking lot in the Gries district of Graz to hand over the money. A so-called pick-up lady – a woman about 5 feet 6 inches tall, 20 to 30 years old with black hair and Southern appearance – was already waiting for her.

This serious fraud is not an isolated incident, the police emphasize and provide tips on how to recognize such scams. This means that the police will not call you to ask for money. And she doesn’t come to anyone’s house to collect money.
