According to official information, Ukrainian troops have reached the border with Russia in the east. The governor of the region of the same name, Oleh Sinegubov, said it was soldiers who defended the city of Kharkov. Meanwhile, the frontline in Donbass shifted in favor of Russia.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has released a video showing soldiers standing next to a border post in the national colors of blue and yellow. At least at one point they advanced as far as the Russian border.
‘Unstoppable counter-offensive’
In the northeast of the country, Ukrainian armed forces have gained ground in recent days and pushed Russian units back into the Kharkov area. Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine after the capital Kiev. The fighting at Kharkov is “our counter-offensive,” Interior Ministry adviser Vadym Denysenko said on television. “It’s unstoppable.” This offensive allowed Ukrainian soldiers to stab Russian troops in the back.
Russians keep advancing
In the eastern Ukrainian region of Luhansk, however, the situation remained difficult, local governor Serhiy Hajdaj said. Russian troops are still trying to take the city of Severodonetsk, Hajday says on TV. The leaders of the self-declared People’s Republic of Lugansk had called for general mobilization. The Luhansk People’s Republic, recognized by Russia but not internationally, occupied pro-Russian separatist-controlled territory in Ukraine’s Luhansk region.
Russian troops were advancing in some places in the Donbass. Russia is also expected to rally troops in Izium in the south of the country.
