An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 struck the border area between Bosnia and Montenegro. The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred on Thursday morning, was about 30 kilometers from the Montenegrin city of Niksic and about 25 kilometers from the Bosnian city of Bileca.
Information about possible damage or injury was initially not available. According to the American Earthquake Observatory USGS, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7.6 kilometers and was felt in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, among other places.
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake in the region in April 2022 left one person dead and several injured.
High seismic activity
The Balkan region has high seismic activity. In late December 2020, seven people were killed in a 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Croatia, destroying hundreds of buildings.
In March 2020, the Croatian capital Zagreb was hit by a magnitude 5.3 earthquake, causing extensive damage. In November 2019, more than 50 people were killed in a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Albania.
