Dramatic scenes in the Lower Austrian district of Neunkirchen: A house caught fire in the middle of the night while the residents were still sleeping. Two firefighters’ lives were saved.
A newspaper deliverer noticed smoke coming from the roof of a residential building in Grottendorf near Feistritz am Wechsel in the Neunkirchen district on Thursday night around 3:30 am – he immediately called the emergency number. In addition to the local fire brigade, comrades from Kirchberg and Aspang were also warned. Patrick Lechner from operational documentation, who is himself a member of the Edlitz fire brigade, also arrived on site.
Two first aiders on site
Together with Christian Haberl from the Aspang road maintenance department, also a firefighter in Edlitz, he was the first to arrive at the stricken house. “It was clearly a roof fire. “It was unclear whether there were still people in the house,” Lechner reports.
Enter the house through the window
The two emergency workers therefore banged on the front door to draw attention to themselves: ‘Since there was no response, we broke a window.’ While Haberl then ordered the first fire engines to arrive, Lechner climbed over the window into the house and left. clearly noticeable there.
Residents woke up
And indeed: a moment later the two owners stood sleepily in front of him. Only then were they shocked to hear that the upper part of their house was already completely engulfed in flames. Lechner got the two out as quickly as possible. Thanks to the courageous intervention of Haberl and Lechner, they escaped in horror.
Extreme heat, narrow spaces
Further extinguishing work was difficult because of the enormous heat released and because the top floor could only be reached via a narrow corridor. The emergency services had to partially open the roof to reach all the fire sources. The fire was under control three hours later.
