According to NATO estimates, Russian losses in the war of aggression against Ukraine have increased significantly recently. As Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of the alliance, announced in Brussels on Thursday, Western intelligence services believe the number of killed or wounded Russian soldiers has now exceeded 350,000.
The country is paying a very high price for marginal territorial gains, Stoltenberg said. Ukrainian attacks have also sunk or disabled a significant portion of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, Stoltenberg added. In the air war, Ukraine shoots down important, high-quality Russian surveillance aircraft.
Stoltenberg did not say how many of the Russian victims were dead by NATO estimates. At the end of November last year, alliance circles were talking about significantly more than 100,000 – at the time total losses were estimated at more than 300,000 Russian soldiers. These figures cannot be independently verified. The Russian side does not provide precise information about the losses in its own ranks.
Support Kiev
At the same time, Stoltenberg called on the 32 NATO states to provide more military support to Ukraine. “The situation remains very difficult. “Ukraine urgently needs ammunition,” he warned. The NATO Secretary General specifically addressed US presidential candidate Donald Trump’s Republicans, who are currently blocking planned aid from Joe Biden’s government. Every day of delay affects the situation on the battlefield, he said on the sidelines of a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda at NATO headquarters.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia’s war of aggression with Western help for more than two years. Lately, however, the situation at the front had been very tense. According to their own statements, the Ukrainian armed forces urgently need further supplies of weapons and ammunition to hold out against the attackers from Russia.
