US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Austria on Friday. According to the Foreign Ministry, he will meet with Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (both ÖVP) on Thursday.
According to a report in the daily newspaper “Die Presse”, Blinken will participate in the annual conference of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna.
According to the State Department, Blinken’s talks with the Chancellor and the Secretary of State will take place in the Federal Chancellery. This will be followed by a press conference with Schallenberg at 3:15 p.m. Blinken and Schallenberg are expected to emphasize harmony on international issues. Both countries are among Israel’s strongest supporters in the Middle East conflict. Washington and Vienna are also joining forces against Russian aggression in Ukraine, although Austria does not want to provide military support to the besieged country due to its neutrality under international law. Blinken’s deputy, James O’Brien, praised Austria as a “great partner” in an APA interview in Vienna in December.
