A robot dog is being tested to protect Munich’s S-Bahn trains from sprinklers and vandalism. As announced on Thursday, the electric animal will patrol S-Bahn car parks and – supported by artificial intelligence – detect irregularities, such as unauthorized people on site.
The robot dog is the ‘Spot’ model from the American company Boston Dynamics. If the device detects a suspicious pattern, it starts a video transmission, which is monitored elsewhere by security service personnel.
All-terrain and robust
‘Spot’ also walks on its four legs over rough terrain and uses sensors and cameras to avoid collisions. After a fall, the device can get back up on its own.
The test will initially last a month
According to the information, the robot dog will initially be tested for a month. The railroad will then decide whether to purchase additional units for long-term use.
According to the railway, removing graffiti costs the S-Bahn in the Bavarian capital a high six-figure sum every year. On average, twelve vehicles go to the workshop every week to have graffiti removed.
