The start of the third construction phase of the renovation was given in Melk Abbey. The federal army also actively helped by building a temporary bridge for visitors.
Let’s build bridges! This is now actually put into practice in Melk Abbey. “Building bridges connects spaces and people from all over the world,” says Abbot Georg Wilfinger. To allow hundreds of thousands of visitors to view the baroque jewel unhindered, the Melk pioneers of the federal army built a temporary bridge.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner also saw with her own eyes the successful pioneering work on the construction site. In the third construction phase of the restoration work planned until 2032, the renovation of the entrance area of the library – the so-called gazebo – is on the agenda.
In addition to the renewal of the floor structure, the construction of a reinforced concrete ceiling and a new drainage system, the renovation of the louvered windows, the cleaning of books and mapping the damage, as well as the restoration of books are planned. This year alone, approximately 1.35 million euros will be spent on this (325,000 euros from the government). By 2032, eleven million euros (from the Federal Monuments Office, the state, the monastery, the municipality and the supporting association) will flow into the entire restoration.
Preservation of monuments for generations
“It is our responsibility and duty to pass on the pens properly to future generations. “The preservation of monuments is very important,” explains Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner. The major restoration project of the Benedictine monastery started already in 2022: the scope extends from the facade to the ventilation and fire protection measures.
