A police officer was killed during a house search near the Belgian city of Charleroi on Monday. The special forces officer was hit by shots during the operation and died, Belga news agency reported. Two other officers were injured, one seriously.
According to reports from Belga, a person had barricaded himself in the house in the town of Lodelinsart, south of Brussels. The search turned into a gunfight. The suspect shot at several police officers.
Second police officer in critical condition
A second police officer is in critical condition in hospital. Another was injured, but his life was not in danger. The suspect was also taken to hospital in critical condition. Nothing is yet known about the background of the search.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo expressed his condolences to the family of the murdered man. “The work of our law enforcement officers in the service of the people deserves respect. Targeting them is despicable and will never go unpunished,” he wrote on X.
