Including family – killed in Ukrainian attacks on the border area

Date:

Four people were killed on Monday by Ukrainian shelling in the Russian border region of Belgorod. The regional governor said it was a couple, a grandmother and a 17-year-old boy. A girl is seriously injured in intensive care.

Their house was directly hit by a shell during attacks on the village of Nikolskoye, about 20 kilometers from the border. Other people were also injured in Ukrainian attacks on several villages. According to the governor, houses and cars were damaged and in one case a power line was hit.

The Russian border region of Belgorod was increasingly attacked in the days before and during the presidential elections by exiled Russian militias fighting on the side of Ukraine. The groups even claimed to have invaded Russia and captured villages. The war opponent rejected this. However, intensive shelling hit Russian villages as well as the regional capital Belgorod. A total of eleven people are said to have been killed and more than 80 injured in the area in the past week.

Will the buffer zone come?
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Sunday evening that his forces could occupy Ukrainian border areas to form a buffer zone against such attacks (see video above). He did not say how large this zone should be. It had to be at least large enough that Russian territory could not be reached by foreign weapons, they said. The Ukrainian government accuses Putin of trying to escalate the war. A buffer zone is a clear declaration of war, said Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoljak.
