A delegation from Israel is now taking part in the negotiations in the Gaza war. The security cabinet approved the departure of a delegation to Qatar on Sunday evening. The leader is said to be the head of the foreign secret service Mossad, David Barnea.
The negotiations concern a temporary ceasefire in the war and the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the US are currently trying to move forward the talks that have recently stalled.
The Islamist Hamas had previously presented a new proposal to the mediators (see video above). This no longer requires the Israeli military to end the war before the first hostages are exchanged for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons. However, the cessation of hostilities would be a prerequisite for a second phase.
Hamas changed its position
This brings Hamas closer to the content of a multi-phase plan presented several weeks ago and also accepted by the Israeli government. As a result of this rapprochement, the war opponent is now prepared to participate in the indirect mediation talks in Qatar for the first time in two weeks.
Terrorists from Hamas and other extreme groups attacked Israel on October 7, killing people and abducting more than 250 people to the Gaza Strip. During a ceasefire in late November, 105 hostages were released. According to the Israeli government, about a hundred are still alive. The massacre sparked the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
