After celebrations marking his election victory and the tenth anniversary of the annexation of Crimea, the re-elected Russian ruler is now returning to the fight against internal enemies. In a speech to representatives of the domestic secret service FSB, Vladimir Putin called for the hunt for “traitors” in the country.
They must all be named and punished, Putin said on Tuesday in a noticeably angry tone. “We will punish them without the statute of limitations, wherever they are.” Russia will never forget these traitors who committed crimes against the country.
“Sabotage and terrorist groups”
With his comments, Putin specifically referred to the attacks in the Russian border region of Belgorod, where civilians were recently killed again. Massive shelling took place there, especially in the days of the presidential elections from Friday to Sunday. Putin had spoken of terror aimed at disrupting the vote. According to him, the “sabotage and terrorist groups” include not only regular soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but also mercenaries and other “rabble” – including Russian citizens.
“We are dealing with a dangerous opponent”
“We are dealing with a strong, dangerous adversary that has broad information, technical and financial capabilities in its arsenal.” Putin also recalled the blowing up of Nord Stream 1 and the gas pipelines built through the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany 2. In order to survive in the battle, the head of the Kremlin ordered the FSB to intensify cooperation with foreign intelligence services.
Defense capabilities on Russia’s borders must be strengthened, for example through greater effectiveness of mobile units, Putin said. This does not only mean land routes, but also sea routes, including in the Black Sea. The FSB is also responsible for border protection in Russia.
