It’s hard to imagine the torment endured by a 16-month-old child in Cleveland, Ohio: Jailyn was left alone in the apartment by her mother for 10 days while the 32-year-old went on vacation. When Kristel Candelario returned, her daughter was hungry and thirsty.
The tragedy happened last June and was recently heard in court. Gruesome details came to light. Candelario put the little girl in a playpen and drove to Puerto Rico with her boyfriend and eldest daughter.
The case caused horror on social media:
Woman posted photo of beach while daughter died of thirst
During her vacation, the 32-year-old shared photos from the beach and wrote, “The time you enjoy is the time you truly live.” Meanwhile, her 16-month-old daughter fought for survival at home. When Candelario returned 10 days later, she found the child was no longer breathing. The alarmed rescuers found the child on a mattress covered in urine and feces. All they could determine was that the girl was dead.
In this post you can see the holiday photo that the 32-year-old shared on social media while her daughter was home alone:
Mother pleaded guilty in court
The woman is said to have had psychological problems when she left her daughter to fend for herself in favor of her holiday. She was charged with aggravated murder and child endangerment and pleaded guilty. “The loss of my baby Jailyn hurts me so much,” the 32-year-old said during the court hearing. “I am extremely hurt by what happened. “I don’t try to justify my actions, but no one knew how much I suffered and what I had to endure… God and my daughter have forgiven me.”
“Just as you didn’t let Jailyn out of her prison, you should spend the rest of your life in a cell without freedom,” the judge ultimately said during the trial. “The only difference will be that at least the prison will feed you and give you the fluids you denied it.” Candelario was ultimately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
