A special family business in Burgenland: a 48-year-old grew 400 cannabis plants in the backyard for more than five years. His profit amounted to 91,000 euros – also and especially because his daughter and son sold the material throughout the neighborhood.
Because the now 28-year-old daughter had been addicted to drugs since she was 12, the father (48) started growing cannabis at home in 2019. ‘If we hadn’t done it, she would have gotten the material from somewhere else. But the stuff is stretched! Then she may have poisoned herself,” says the Mittelburgenlander, before finally admitting that he had started the trade to make a profit. “And yes, the children were used as salespeople.”
150 euros as “commission” for the children
Until the summer of 2024 there were four rearing sessions per year. A total of 400 plants bloomed. 16 kilos were harvested and packed. From the age of 18, the daughter sold 10 kilos, the son (21) 4 kilos. The father always prepared the 50 gram portions and received 350 euros each from the children. They were left with 150 as a “commission”.
High costs for electricity
The additional income of the parents – the mother (51) worked as a harvest assistant – amounted to 91,000 euros in these five years. “But I also had high electricity costs,” the father said before the jury court in Eisenstadt. Like his wife and daughter, he was released from custody for trial.
A steadily growing dialogue arises between the chairman, Birgit Falb, and the brain. “It is extremely morally reprehensible that you flooded the entire neighborhood with your drugs.” – ‘It couldn’t have been prevented, no matter what we did.’ – ‘And if you hadn’t been arrested, you would have been cultivated for 20 years, right?’ – ‘I wanted to stop!’ – ‘Why? “ – “Because you see where this leads, which is here in the courtroom.” – “Can you actually still look yourself in the mirror?”
Prison sentences are imposed
After extensive deliberation, the father was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison, the mother to 2.5 years and the son to 12 months. Only the 2.5 year prison sentence for the daughter is legally binding. Naturally, the pre-trial detention since June is taken into account.
