Because more and more teenagers are allegedly using unnecessary skin care products, a major pharmacy chain in Sweden has now introduced an age limit of 15 years. For example, anti-aging serums and products containing vitamin A or C are affected.
Products with the active ingredients AHA and BHA are also only available to customers aged 15 and older. However, there are exceptions for children and young people who have parental consent or can provide proof of a medical certificate. “Today, young people are using skin care products in unhealthy and unhelpful ways (…) and we want to be the voice that says ‘Stop’,” says the boss of the Apotek Hjärtat chain, Monika Magnusson.
“Worry about trends”
Her company is “concerned about this trend.” “Using wrinkle reduction products is not something a child needs,” says chief pharmacist Annika Svedberg. The age limit should encourage “important conversations between parents, in families and in society about ideals and norms.” About 390 branches and online retailers are affected by the new regulations.
On the online platform TikTok, eight to twelve year olds are already demonstrating new cosmetics and care products in clips, especially from expensive brands. Dermatologists and psychologists are concerned.
