Cyber fraudsters twice scammed a woman from Klagenfurt: the strangers posed as classical musicians and tricked the woman into believing they were meeting. After the money flowed, suddenly the ‘real musician’ emerged…
The Klagenfurt resident is a fan of classical music. In February of the previous year, contact had already been made with a well-known musician via a courier service. The woman was promised a meeting with the artist for a fee. The 71-year-old transferred a total of five figures at the time. But because no meeting ever took place, the woman reported the incident in Vienna.
Musicians with a guilty conscience
At the beginning of this year, Klagenfurt was contacted again via the courier service. This time the supposedly real musician wrote that he was aware of the fraud. Because he had a bad conscience, he promised the pensioner that he would pay part of the damage himself. To do this, the 71-year-old would have to open an account with a US financial institution. For the trouble and expense, she has to transfer various amounts via voucher cards.
Once again, the woman thought she was in contact with the real musician and followed his instructions. By the time the report was re-reported, money had flowed in in the mid-four figures.
