Three Carinthian ski tourers caused a snow patch during the descent in the Hohe Tauern on Friday. One of the men, a 64-year-old from Villach, was buried under the avalanche, but fortunately was quickly freed.
The men had already left in the morning for a ski trip from Mallnitz to the Feldseescharte. Everyone was equipped with emergency equipment (LVS, probe, shovel). Around 12:30 p.m. they drove up a steep eastern slope 8,000 feet above sea level, causing a snow patch. A 64-year-old man from Villach was hit, dragged 300 meters and buried. “Only the hand stuck out of the mass of snow,” police said.
Tourist seriously injured
The other two comrades were also caught in the avalanche, but were able to escape the danger area by escaping and freeing the man from Villach from the snow masses after only ten minutes. The man was unresponsive but seriously injured and had to be rescued by the rescue helicopter C7 using a rope and flown to the intermediate landing site in Mallnitz, where he received first aid from the emergency doctor and members of the Mallnitz mountain rescue service.
The injured person was then flown to Lienz Hospital. The two uninjured touring cars were also flown from the accident scene to the valley by a rescue helicopter. 17 members of the Mallnitz mountain rescue service, three members of the Spittal/Drau Alpine police, the C7 rescue helicopter and the Libelle Carinthia police helicopter were present.
