Chance of seeing the Northern Lights over Austria

Date:

Because a solar storm has hit the Earth’s magnetic field, there is a chance to see the Northern Lights in Austria on Monday evening. Requirement: No clouds obstructing the view.

Hours earlier than expected, a solar storm hit Earth’s magnetic field on Sunday, causing a severe geomagnetic storm, reports the website spaceweather.com, run by astronomer Tony Phillips.

Can lead to power outages
This space weather event can cause high-energy particles to be ejected toward Earth, damaging electronics on satellites and disrupting radio transmissions. The electricity grids on the ground are also at risk: magnetic storms can cause damage to transformer stations and thus lead to power outages.

Observation possible from early Monday morning
A solar storm is not dangerous for people on the ground, on the contrary: this event gives us the chance to see the Northern Lights in Austria from early Monday morning heading north – if the sky is clear.

The spectacular light phenomena in the sky arise because high-energy charged particles hit Earth’s atmosphere and excite nitrogen and oxygen atoms. Light is emitted. The last time you could marvel at the glow in the sky in Central Europe was in November.
