The US Supreme Court will hear arguments on Tuesday over access to the abortion pill Mifepristone. Opponents of abortion want to use their lawsuit to make access to medical abortion more difficult.
From 3:00 PM CET, the Supreme Court will hear arguments from both sides. The pill Mifepristone was approved in the US in 2000. However, last year an appeals court imposed access restrictions that are not yet in effect as the legal dispute continues.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), mifepristone is a reliable drug. It is shipped across state lines and can be taken home. Since the Supreme Court overturned the right to abortion nearly two years ago, the drug has grown in importance. Currently, the parliaments of the individual states can regulate by law whether abortions are allowed or not. This has created a legal patchwork.
Judgment expected later
Opponents of abortion have filed a lawsuit against the approval of mifepristone. A ruling is not expected until a later date. However, the judges’ position could become clear during Tuesday’s hearing.
In Europe there is also a medicine with the active ingredient mifepristone on the market, but this is called Mifegyne.
