Erkoreka will not appear in court for the death of a young man in February during a police intervention in Astigarraga

Date:

The Permanent Deputation Council has refused to process the request to appear, submitted by EH Bildu, after it became aware of the facts through people close to the family who understood that there was police violence.

The security advisor to the Basque government, Josu Erkorekawill not appear before Parliament’s Permanent Delegation to report on the death of a young man that occurred on February 2 during a police intervention in Astigarraga (Gipuzkoa).

This Monday, the Permanent Deputation Council refused to process EH Bildu’s request to appear, after this group became aware of the facts through people close to the family who understood that there was police violence.

In a statement released last Friday, the Ministry of Security assured that “there are no complaints” regarding these events.

He contextualized what happened during an action in which the local police and Ertzaintza patrols intervened, who went to the scene to “introduce” the later deceased in an ambulance so that he could be treated, as “he presented an ambulance.” self-inflicted injuries derived from being state of exaltation“.

After emphasizing that this individual was not detained “at any time,” the Security Department clarified that he “was immobilized by the officers to prevent him from continuing to harm himself, given his visible state of maximum agitation.”

The representative of EH Bildu Julen Arzuaga has accused the PNV and the PSE-EE of showing “absolute contempt and disrespect for the family” of the deceased “during an Ertzaintza operation”, by requesting the coalition to send the Security Council advisor to the Chamber to let go “to reject” to explain this.

The coalition released a statement saying that this young man “was affected by a psychotic crisishe took to the streets and although the municipal police initially managed to calm him down, The situation deteriorated when the Ertzaintza took control of the operationwith the end result being the young man’s death.”

EH Bildu has stated that the causes of death have not yet been determined and that the family, in addition to denouncing the actions of the Ertzainas who participated in the operation, has demanded that the facts be clarified in detail.

For this reason, Arzuaga has denounced that “the decision taken today by PNV and PSE-EE refusing to provide Erkoreka with this explanation is particularly painful; it is a absolute contempt and a terrible one disrespect to the family.”

“While the family demands transparency, PNV and PSE-EE respond with obscurantism and opacity so that Erkoreka can remain silent,” he criticized.

Arzuaga has faulted both sides for claiming that “there is no urgency to provide explanations for a death that occurred in the context of an Ertzaintza operation.” “Doesn’t the family urgently deserve to know what happened? Is that the response the family deserves from the PNV and the PSE?” he asked.

The representative of EH Bildu has also recalled that this case came to light “because the family itself made it public”, as the security department “has tried to hide it from the first moment, violating the principle of transparency which is essential is in the actions of a democratic police.” Arzuaga added that this course of action was “common during Erkoreka’s mandate.”
