Four adults with four (small) children – one only a year old – were able to escape from a burning house in Schwaz in the Tyrolean lowlands on Sunday morning. Neighbors were also evacuated. 130 firefighters and a large Red Cross contingent were deployed.
“Everyone is doing well, the rest doesn’t matter!” Ekrem Kirchmeyr (52) was still in shock on Sunday morning. He lived with his wife (39) and their two children (4 and one year old) on the first floor of the house in Schwazer Lahnbachgasse, the roof of which caught fire on Sunday morning.
Heard glass breaking
“Luckily we woke up just before half past four to the sound of breaking glass. “The roof structure and the terrace were already completely on fire,” he says, “and then we immediately left the house.”
An Indian couple (42 and 40 years old) and their two children (12 and 5), who were staying in a holiday apartment on the ground floor, were also able to escape to safety.
People evacuated from neighboring house
“It looked bad when we arrived, the area was completely built up, several roof trusses were interlocking,” said Hilmar Baumann, commander of the Schwaz fire brigade. Emergency services initially focused on preventing the flames from spreading to neighboring houses. “Once this was safe, we focused on fighting the attic fire,” Baumann said.
Rescue workers evacuated two 63-year-old residents from a neighboring apartment building because windows were broken and smoke was coming in.
There were no injuries, the attic burned down completely and the cause of the fire is unknown. There were 130 Florianis from all over the region, police and rescue services present.
