The federal army is investing 19.3 million euros in new protective equipment. This includes NBC protective suits, but also new NBC protective masks, fire helmets and emergency helmets. For Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, the individual protection of troops, including civilian personnel, is the “top priority”.
The purchase of the most modern protective clothing was a “major concern” for her, Tanner emphasized on Thursday during the ceremonial handover at the Ministry of Defense. The NBC protective suits are an important part of individual equipment and protect against the effects of nuclear, biological and chemically hazardous substances, the report said. The breathable structure reduces heat build-up and moisture formation. This allowed operating time under ABC conditions to be “significantly increased”, to approximately six hours. Initially, 30,000 units were purchased with an investment volume of ten million euros. Another 6,000 copies will follow every year.
70,000 protective masks were purchased for the NBC defense unit at a cost of nine million euros. They protect against radioactive, biological and chemical hazards and have a drinking connection. In addition, 750 new fire helmets were ordered for 216,000 euros to replace 20-year-old models. They are used by NBC defense, fire protection forces and other units.
Particularly light helmets with a communication system
200 special helmets were purchased for 39,000 euros for the AFDRU disaster unit. These are compatible with respiratory protection and communication systems, heat and cold resistant and particularly light.
