Training in dealing with extreme situations is essential for aspiring mountain rescuers. However, an incident occurred during such an exercise on Wednesday in Galtür in Tyrol. One participant (31) was seriously injured.
As part of training, a rope climbing exercise was performed on an artificial ice climbing tower on Wednesday around 2:30 p.m. At the foot of the ice tower were two stands in the shape of so-called ice bells with safety points in the ice.
The turning pulley came loose and hit the 31-year-old
As rescuers lifted a person into a stretcher, ice broke out near a belay area. This caused the pulley to come loose and hit a potential mountain rescuer. The 31-year-old Austrian suffered significant facial injuries.
The comrades and the instructor provided first aid. The injured man was then flown to the hospital in Zams by emergency helicopter.
