A 43-year-old German woman was buried approximately 70 centimeters deep and did not survive the accident despite resuscitation.

A 43-year-old ski tourer from Germany, who was revived on Tuesday after an avalanche in Vorarlberg, in the municipality of Partenen (Montafon), died on Friday in the regional hospital of Feldkirch, according to police.

Her condition was described as critical immediately after successful resuscitation. She was buried about 70 centimeters deep and it took about 20 minutes before she was rescued from the snow.

Couple from Germany
The woman was traveling with her 46-year-old husband on Tuesday; the couple from Augsburg (Bavaria) were considered alpine experienced. Due to diffuse visibility, the couple changed their plan and wanted to return via the “Green Kuppe” to the Wiesbadener Hut (2,430 meters), from where they had started, when there was significant avalanche danger (level 3). To do this, the 46-year-old drove into a north-facing slope that was about 30 degrees steep ahead of his wife. The avalanche then released and reached an initial width of approximately 100 meters and a length of approximately 100 meters.

Both were hit by the snowbank. But while the 43-year-old was buried, her husband was able to remain on the surface. After locating his wife’s victim locator near the avalanche outlet, he immediately began the rescue operation. At the same time, an uninvolved ski tourer made an emergency call to the emergency services and then assisted the man in digging out and resuscitating the 43-year-old.
