A Viennese horse-drawn carriage refused to keep its two guests waiting when demonstrators blocked the road to parliament. The horses ran with him, in the truest sense of the word. He simply drove the carriage towards the human chain, injuring one of the demonstrators and now facing trial.
Two tourists in Vienna experienced a rather unusual horse-drawn carriage ride: on September 20 of the previous year, there was a large-scale protest action by the Austrian Trade Union Confederation against inflation – a long chain of people formed around the parliament, banners and signs were held up . The participants also closed a side street of the Vienna Ring.
Protester is taken away by carriage
That didn’t suit a horse-drawn carriage at all; the horses ran away with him. In the presence of the police, one of the demonstrators recalled: “I was shocked when the driver steered the carriage towards me.” The man jumped to the side, stumbled and was just able to grab hold of a small lantern on the carriage – would he have gone with it? He suffered a cut to his elbow and several bruises.
Defender: Fiaker did not want to endanger the guests
“He would have preferred to have it reversed,” said Fiaker’s lawyer at the regional court in Vienna. The 47-year-old Bulgarian must face criminal charges for bodily harm, coercion and preventing or disrupting a meeting. Before judge Christian Gneist, he takes full responsibility, but not blame. His lawyer believes that he could not have stopped the horses in time without potentially endangering the guests in the carriage.
That is enough for a diversionary settlement: the Bulgarian will pay 500 euros in court, and another 300 euros in compensation must be paid to the victim – who skipped the trial. While the Fiaker is registered with the AMS from January to March, it can start working again next month.
