Hurricane-like wind gusts are currently causing severe weather in western Austria. There is currently a red warning level in Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg. The weather is also causing unrest in the south, in Carinthia: heavy rain showers fall in Villach Land and Hermagor. In Tyrol, the state government has been repeating since Sunday afternoon that it must exercise special caution.
Due to a strong southerly current, stormy foehn winds can still be expected in many valleys in Austria on Easter Sunday. As in the previous days, persistent warm air masses from North Africa and a very high concentration of dust from the Sahara will be sent our way at the end of the week.

It is not yet completely clear in Tyrol either: the second highest warning level in North Tyrol will remain in force until Monday morning. There are stormy gusts and wind peaks of 60 to 80 km/h. In typical Föhn valleys the peaks are around 100 km/h. Hurricane-like wind gusts of more than 120 km/h can be expected on the mountains. The fire brigade has registered more than 110 missions since Friday and according to current information no people have been injured.
In Carinthia, heavy rain showers also occur in the Hermagor and Villach Land areas. The red warning level also applies here, according to the Austrian Severe Weather Center (uwz). “Orange” alert levels due to the strong enemy also extend to Vienna. Parts of Styria, Upper and Lower Austria and Burgenland are also affected.
The Foehn phase ends on Easter Monday
During Easter Monday, a powerful cold front will move from west to east across the country, bringing an end to the long-lasting foehn phase. In Vorarlberg to Upper Carinthia it is expected to rain regularly and locally heavy. In the afternoon there will also be showers in the east and there may also be thunder and lightning, especially in Styria. Before that, the sun appears here, and in the evening it can occasionally be seen in the west.
