For the second time, someone in the US has been confirmed as having bird flu. The American health authority CDC announced on Monday that the affected person was infected with the virus through contact with dairy cows.
The affected patient only experiences red eyes, which may be related to conjunctivitis. He is being treated with an antiviral drug for bird flu and is already on the mend, the report said.
CDC: Risk to the population low
The CDC also stated that the threat to the U.S. population from bird flu remains low and that the infection does not impact the agency’s risk assessment. The bird flu virus H5N1 has recently been found not only in birds, but also in mammals such as foxes, otters and bears. These findings could mean that people are also at risk.
Cows tested positive for bird flu
Just a week ago, a study of mysterious illnesses in dairy cows in Texas, Kansas and New Mexico identified highly pathogenic bird flu in raw milk and nasal swab tests in Kansas and Texas.
The first case occurred in the US in 2022
The first infection of a person in the US occurred in the US state of Colorado in 2022; the patient affected at the time became infected through contact with poultry.
