New threats emerged from Tehran on Tuesday following the airstrike on the Iranian embassy in Syria that killed seven people, including two brigadier generals. President Ebrahim Raisi said the Israeli attack in the Syrian capital Damascus would not go unanswered. The pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia has also vowed revenge and wants to ‘punish’ those responsible.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry and its ambassador to Syria had previously announced that reactions to the attack were expected. Iran attributes the airstrike to Israel.
In addition to the two brigadiers, the fatalities also included five members of the powerful Revolutionary Guard. An Israeli military spokesman declined to comment. Israel has repeatedly attacked Iranian military facilities in Syria. There had been no previous attack on the extensive embassy complex in Damascus.
“Important message” to the US
According to Foreign Minister Hussein Amirabdollahian, Iran sent an “important message” to the US after the airstrike, emphasizing the US’s “shared responsibility” as a supporter of Israel. The minister did not provide specific information about the content.
“Punishment and revenge for the enemy”
The pro-Iranian Lebanese militia Hezbollah, which is fighting Israel, in turn emphasized that the attack would not be without consequences. The organization stated on Tuesday evening: ‘This crime will certainly not pass without the enemy experiencing punishment and revenge.’ The “enemy” still believes that the elimination of leaders “can stop the people’s determined resistance,” the organization continued.
Iran is Hezbollah’s biggest supporter in Lebanon. The Shiite militia fights politically but also violently against Israel. It is one of Iran’s “Axis of Resistance”. With its own militia, it mainly controls the south of Lebanon, on the border with Israel, the Shiite-inhabited districts of the capital Beirut and the Bekaa Valley in the north of the country. Hezbollah is also active in Syria.
Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN described the attack as a violation of the UN Charter, international law and the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular institutions. Iran is also calling on the UN Security Council to condemn the attack.
