Many people were injured when a passenger train in Slovakia collided with a locomotive. The television channel TV Markiza estimated the number of injured on Friday evening at a maximum of 100.
The Ministry of Transport in Bratislava and the state railway company confirmed the accident to the TASR news agency, but initially declined to provide information on the number of injuries or deaths.
Accident at railway junction
The police called on drivers via digital networks to avoid the area around the accident site in the northern Slovak municipality of Strecno in order to facilitate access for firefighters and rescue vehicles. The Transport Ministry announced that Transport Minister Andrej Dolezal was on his way to the accident site.
This is close to an important railway junction where the railway lines from the inland to Bratislava and those to the Czech Republic converge.
