Internal documents reveal an apparently hidden incident in the US: a robot attacked a worker at a factory of car manufacturer Tesla. The man was grabbed by the arm by the machine and was injured.
The incident had already occurred in 2021 and only now came to light after the British newspaper ‘Daily Mail’ gained access to the company’s internal documents. In the documents, colleagues describe the dramatic, bloody scenes: The arm of a packaging robot ‘attacked’ an engineer during his shift and grabbed his hand.
Eyewitnesses ran over and had to press the emergency stop switch to release the robot’s grip. The man, who was injured in the back, left arm and left hand, then fell and slid for several meters along an aluminum scrap chute, leaving a trail of blood.
On average, one in 21 employees was injured in the past year
Despite the seriousness of the incident, the driver did not request any days of leave. However, a lawyer interviewed by Daily Mail points out that the number of accidents at Gigafactories could be higher than reported by the company. At the Tesla Gigafactory in Texas, an average of one in 21 employees was injured in 2022. In an industry comparison, there is an average of one injury per 30 employees.
Just two months ago, a mechanical arm in South Korea mistook a worker for a crate of vegetables he was supposed to pick up and crushed him.
