Latvia will provide additional military assistance to Ukraine in its defense against Russia. After meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister Evika Silina announced a new aid package. Accordingly, material and technical resources from the stocks of the army of the Baltic EU and NATO country will be transferred in April.
Ammunition, explosives and weapons, as well as transport equipment, personal equipment and support equipment would be supplied, Silina said in Riga. In addition, Latvia will soon send the first drones worth one million euros to Ukraine.
Latvian drones are ‘combat fit’
Silina said the Ukrainians had already tested the unmanned aerial vehicles and recognized that they were combat-ready. Latvia wants to release ten million euros this year for the development of drones.
‘One or more people’ may also be sent to Ukraine to be able to coordinate technical solutions for the drones on site more quickly and flexibly.
Border crossings with Russia remain closed
Finland extends the closure of border crossings with Russia until further notice. In February, the government initially limited the border closure to April 14.
Finland closed its land borders with Russia at the end of last year as the number of refugees from countries such as Syria and Somalia increased.
Finland is also expanding the list of ports where entry is prohibited. Finland joined NATO in the wake of the Russian attack on Ukraine and shares a border of about 1,300 kilometers with Russia.
