An accident involving a Czech freight train led to the closure of the Semmering railway line near Breitenstein (Neunkirchen district) on Thursday. Hundreds of passengers are now stuck at Mürzzuschlag train station. Long-distance trains should be able to run again from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.
It happened around 10:30 am: a freight train derailed near Breitenstein on the border between Lower Austria and Styria, and the axle of another train jumped off the rails.
The damage investigation is ongoing
“A local inspection is currently taking place, we have to see if the train can be put back on the track,” ÖBB spokesman Christopher Seif said in an initial statement to “Krone”. The aircraft, which was en route from Italy to Bratislava, Slovakia, had no cargo on board.

Passengers need patience
Replacement rail services are planned on the Southern Railway from April 6 to 28 due to renovation work. Between Wiener Neustadt and Mürzzuschlag, all passengers must disembark and transfer to buses.
