New zones presented – Wind farms can be planned in Lower Austria in the future

Wind turbines in Lower Austria often cause heated and controversial debates. After ten years, there is now a new edition of the areas that the state reserves for potential wind farms – the “crown” shows all the affected communities. Social compatibility also played an important role in the new plan, the report said.

There will always be headwinds when it comes to wind turbines, State Vice President Stephan Pernkopf, State Councilor for Nature Conservation Susanne Rosenkranz and spatial planner Thomas Knoll agreed when they presented the new zones for potential wind farms. With an amendment to the new wind zone plan, it is hoped that the projects will be slightly less controversial in advance.

Revise old plan
The old plan with 68 zones lasted ten years. In the new variant (see below), which is now open for review for six weeks and then decided by the state government, nine previous areas have been deleted. But 15 more were added. At 7,000 hectares each, the areas have merely changed locations and 28,000 hectares remains 1.5 percent of the country’s area. There are strong differences between the northeast and the southwest…
