A violent earthquake shook the New York metropolitan area Friday morning. The epicenter was in Lebanon, New Jersey, about 40 miles west of the American metropolis.
According to authorities, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.8. It was initially said to have a magnitude of 5.5. According to the European Mediterranean Seismology Center (EMSC), the tremors occurred at 10:20 am local time (4:20 pm CEST) at a depth of 4.7 kilometers.
The earthquake was felt across the entire East Coast
The United States Geological Survey said residents reported feeling the earthquake along the entire East Coast, as well as in the neighboring states of Connecticut and Massachusetts. According to the Weather Channel, a US provider of weather forecasts and weather-related news on cable and satellite television, the tremors were also felt in Boston and Philadelphia.
Fire brigade: No reports of damage
The earthquake was felt as a light rumbling in Manhattan, US media reported. The New York Fire Department said there were initially no reports of damage to buildings.
