A legend says goodbye: this Sunday, Prof. Paul Lendvai, at the age of 94, will visit the “Europastudio” for the last time. He talks to Conny Bischofberger about ORF salaries, coalitions and his adventurous, record-breaking career.
“Come to our house!” Lendvai emails twelve minutes after I asked for an interview early one morning. His Viennese apartment is on the top floor of a Wilhelminian-style house, near the Volksoper. Books as far as the eye can see. Much written by himself and translated into 10 languages, even Japanese and soon also into Chinese.
In the middle of it all, the almost 95-year-old stands happily, dressed in velvet lace-up pants and a colorful checked shirt, and is happy. Short tour, past busts of former fruit block leaders and framed awards. “Here you see my family,” says Lendvai when we arrived in his writing studio with lots of paper and a large magnifying glass. He points to a group photo in sepia. “Everyone killed except me and my mother.” Then his wife Zsoka appears with a tray and the smell of strong coffee spreads.
