According to preliminary operational data from the police, more than 4,600 pyrotechnic items were seized in Austria on New Year’s Eve. Numerous reports and arrests
The main reasons for use around the New Year were noise and reports of pyrotechnic ignitions. There were also bodily injuries, accidents and fires. There were nine arrests nationwide, for example for physical injuries, and another seven administrative arrests.
As of 7 a.m. on January 1, 42 reports of material damage caused by pyrotechnics, eleven reports of negligence of personal injury caused by pyrotechnics and another 25 reports of suspicion of arson using pyrotechnics were submitted. In three cases, officials from Vienna and Styria reported physical attacks on law enforcement officers who intervened.
“New Year’s Eve posed major challenges for the police, rescue services and fire brigades,” Karner emphasizes.
