What a wonderful weekend it was! The sun shone largely clear through a cloudless sky and the thermometer climbed to 30 degrees. It’s no surprise that pub gardens across the country were bursting at the seams and many Viennese even took to the Old Danube to cool off. Just summer.

But stop! Yesterday was April 7. A day on which the requirements for winter tires actually still apply. But also a day that has now found its way into the meteorological history books. Because never before has a truly warm day been recorded so early in the year and the previous record has been virtually broken: on April 17, 1934, meteorologists in the city of Salzburg recorded 30 degrees, this year the mark was surpassed by ten days.

Various measuring stations fought an exciting battle during the course of Sunday. Reichenau an der Rax (Lower Austria) led the way for a long time, but slowed down to 29.8 degrees.
It is hotter here than in Egypt and southern Europe
Shortly before 4 p.m. it was Bruck an der Mur in Styria who cracked 30 and thus secured a place in the annals. By the way, yesterday it was warmer here than in Madrid, Istanbul, Athens or even Cairo, Egypt.
Although the majority of the country enjoyed the beautiful weather, critical voices cannot be ignored: “What will it be like in the middle of summer?” warns Jasmin Duregger, climate expert at the environmental protection organization Greenpeace. “Climate action is the order of the day. To prevent soil erosion that leads to heat islands, apartments must be insulated to keep the heat out for longer.”
