Serious identity theft! William Woods ended up on the streets because of debts and then even in a psychiatric institution in Los Angeles.
Authorities accused the Californian of actually going by the name Matthew Keirans and stealing Wood’s identity. Only now is the 57-year-old finally getting justice, with the real Matthew Keirans facing 32 years in prison.
Woods ended up on the streets in 2019 after being unable to get credit due to an alleged credit card debt of more than $100,000. When he walked into the bank’s headquarters with his Social Security card and California driver’s license, he was unable to answer security questions. The bank manager called the police. Police discovered that the “real” Williams Woods lived in Wisconsin, according to bank records.
False documents
He faxed his fake birth certificate and other false identification documents to agents and identified the Los Angeles “fraudster” as Matthew Keirans. In 1988, he co-ran a hot dog stand in New Mexico.
Woods insisted the man in Wisconsin was lying and that it was the other way around. Nobody believed him. He ended up on the street. When he tried to track down the fake William Wood in Iowa, the meeting ended in a mental asylum. When the real Woods confronted the real Matthew Keirans, he immediately called the police and had the “crazies” arrested.
A DNA test finally cleared up the misunderstanding. The lawsuit against the real Woods was quashed.
