Shouldn’t Muslim children go to school at the end of Ramadan? The email from a Viennese school raises eyebrows.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, Muslims will celebrate the end of Ramadan by breaking the fast (the Eid al-Fitr). In Muslim countries people are free to do that. In Austria this is not the case…
So there was great excitement when all parents of a Viennese secondary school received an email from the director in their inbox. Content: “On Wednesday, the Islamic religious community celebrates Eid-al-Fitr. This day is a normal school day. However, we understand if families of Islamic faith want to celebrate this day with their family.”
Should children skip school?
“Is the director calling for truancy?” some parents asked. asked the “Krone”. There was no response to an email request from the Ministry of Education.
However, the school in question attempted to clarify: “The email was a clarification that exemption would only be granted for one day and in no case for two or three days as submitted on a case-by-case basis.” And an application was absolutely necessary. Skipping is not possible.
Official permission
By the way, a letter from the Ministry of Education to schools dated 2022 mentions Islamic and Orthodox holidays. With the note: Students of the respective religious communities may be given permission to stay away from class during the above-mentioned holidays upon their request.
