The head of the right-wing Italian party Lega, Matteo Salvini, paid a visit to the Frisian seaside resort of Lignano on Saturday and warned against excessive alcohol consumption over the Whitsun weekend.
According to media reports, Salvini has visited Lignano to support his party’s mayoral candidate in the local elections scheduled for June 12. On the beach of Lignano, he had his followers photograph him.
“I took a walk through the center last night. There were a lot of ‘good’ guys who came to Lignano to cause chaos because they weren’t allowed to do it at home,” said Salvini, referring to the many Austrian youngsters who had arrived in Lignano.
About 20,000 Austrians expected
During the Whitsun weekend, 100,000 visitors are expected in Lignano, including 20,000 Austrians. Witnesses reported youth cars with numerous beer and wine bottles in the trunk. The municipality of Lignano has banned the sale of glass bottles and cans this weekend.
Witnesses said it was quiet on Saturday night. In recent years, there has been excessive alcohol consumption in the town during the Whitsun weekend.
