Honey, jam, juice – the EU Parliament has decided on stricter indications of origin

Date:

The EU Parliament decided on Wednesday that the countries of origin of honey should be clearly marked in the future. Until now, all that had to be stated was whether it came from the EU or not. In addition, new rules for jams and juices have been established (see video above)

In the future, juices may be labeled as ‘reduced sugar’ if at least 30 percent of the naturally occurring sugar has been removed. Sweeteners are excluded. For jam it was determined that at least 450 grams of fruit must be used per kilogram.

In the future, the percentage from different countries should be stated for honey. Exceptions are made for small quantities and packages under 30 grams.

603 EU parliamentarians voted in favor of the new ‘breakfast rules’, nine voted against and ten abstained. “In this way we slow down the honey counterfeiters who do business with cheap fake honey from outside the EU at the expense of our beekeepers and help consumers make an informed purchasing decision,” said Austrian MP Alexander Bernhuber (ÖPV). a press release.

“In this way we prevent products that do not meet our EU standards from ending up on our supermarket shelves,” says SPÖ EU MP Günther Sidl, who is also convinced of the stricter regulations. A large part of the honey currently comes from China.
