Devastating wildfires raged in several suburbs of Athens on Saturday, including the posh holiday region of Glyfada. Hundreds of firefighters battled the flames fanned by the violent storm and dozens of homes were evacuated.
Greek Civil Defense called on residents of Ano Vuola and neighboring areas to evacuate their homes as the flames nearly reached a residential area. The mayor of Glyfada municipality, where the fire broke out, told ANA-MPA news agency that the fire started at a power plant.
A total of 72 firefighters with 20 fire engines have been deployed in the residential area south of the Greek capital. They were supported by six firefighting planes and two helicopters. The operation was complicated by sometimes violent gusts of wind. According to local media, there was a power outage in the region.
Last year, more than 100,000 hectares of forest and farmland went up in flames in Greece. At the time, the country was experiencing its worst heat wave in decades, which experts attributed to climate change.
