Wednesday evening was a premiere for Hartberg: the men’s volleyball team played a final match in Innsbruck for the first time. And they did well, forcing defending champion and favorite Hypo Tirol to a fifth set. The “Best-of-7” series will enter the second round on Sunday (live on ORF SPORT+ from 8:15 p.m.). The Stadtwerke-Hartberg-Halle becomes a boiler.
Compared to Tyrol, Hartberg is a relatively small fish. “I think they have twice as much budget for their professional team as we have available for the entire club for all teams,” estimates Hartberg manager Markus Gaugl. The little fish has been making big prey lately. “Last season we came third, this year the second title is guaranteed, and we were in the cup final and played in the European Cup. I would say we have established ourselves as number two in Austria.”
