Barking dogs caused hikers to sit up and alert police in the Gowilalm area in Spital am Pyhrn (Upper Austria) on Saturday. A search subsequently launched soon found a drifter missing – but the 49-year-old could only be rescued dead.
That doesn’t sound good, thought several hikers in the Gowilalm area in Spital am Pyhrn on Saturday afternoon when they heard a dog barking and whining. At the same time, a hut owner filed a complaint because a car had been abandoned since the lecture. The emergency services concluded: A hiker is missing.
Barking reduced the search radius
Mountain rescue services, police and emergency helicopters then started the search. The dog’s barking limited the beam and the rescue helicopter was able to quickly locate the alpinist. However, the emergency doctor who was lifted down could only determine that the alpinist was dead. A 49-year-old from the Amstetten district of Lower Austria had a fatal accident on the so-called Holzeralm.
Fallen at least 50 meters
“It is not yet entirely clear when and where he slipped. “But he fell at least 50 meters over steep terrain,” reports Johannes Breithofer, head of operations at the Spital am Pyhrn mountain rescue service. His team was only able to save the dog; he was unharmed.
