Last weekend, Bruck an der Mur set a new temperature record of exactly 30 degrees – never before has it been so warm so early in Austria. This weekend also gave a taste of summer. Bruck, Hartberg and Deutschlandsberg fought against each other for the position of ‘hotspot’.
Temperatures continue to rise and rise: in Bruck it was 31.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. This made the district town the heat pole of all of Austria! Bruck had recently pushed Hartberg (31 degrees) from first place. 31.1 degrees were measured in Deutschlandsberg and in Graz (30.3 at the university measuring station).
At 5 p.m., Deutschlandsberg was ahead with 31.7 degrees, while in Bruck it was “only” 31.6 degrees.
“Even for April, these peaks occur very early. “We saw these kinds of temperatures – or none at all – at the end of April,” says Ubimet meteorologist Martin Templin. Why exactly is Styria the ‘hotspot’? “This is due to a northwest wind,” Templin explains. “The light breeze from the direction of Burgenland brings the Mürztal and Eastern Styria in particular towards 30 degrees.”
The Styrians took advantage of the weather on Sunday for long bike rides, gossiping over an Aperol spritz in the guest garden, walking and sometimes even swimming in the lakes.
Sun says goodbye for a few days
However, the record temperatures will not last long. “The cold front, which is now over Germany, will reach Upper Styria from Monday afternoon and then the south. “It will thunder at night and it will cool down considerably,” Templin predicts.
What does that mean in concrete terms? “On Tuesday it will be six to thirteen degrees and it will rain, on Wednesday we can expect four to thirteen degrees.” Summer will not make a comeback for a while. Next weekend it will probably be around 15 degrees at most in Graz.
