He was extra careful and wanted to descend the Torstein ice gully on the Dachstein on foot rather than on skis – but that went completely wrong: the tourer (49) from Laakirchen fell 300 meters into the gully and almost tore his friend who was waiting down with him and remained unconscious.
Two friends and experienced mountaineers from Laakirchen, aged 47 and 49, climbed the Torstein in the Dachstein Mountains on Sunday. The two well-equipped athletes started their tour in the early morning hours from the Vorderen Gosausee, first on foot up to about 1600 meters above sea level. From there, the snow cover was closed for the first time and they could continue climbing together on their touring skis to the day’s destination.
The youngest skis away
Their path took them through the challenging and steep Torstein Ice Channel to the nearly 3,000-meter-high summit, which they reached in the late morning. As the 47-year-old skied down the steep gully, his friend decided to descend on foot. A few meters above the very narrow core, the 49-year-old fell about 300 meters down the gully.
Friend almost got carried away
The skier, who was standing slightly below, was almost dragged by his friend, who fell uncontrollably, and had to immediately witness the accident. He gave his friend, who was unconscious for a short time, first aid and called the emergency services. The injured man was rescued at the scene of the accident with the help of a rope from the alarmed emergency medical helicopter.
Suffered multiple injuries
After receiving emergency medical care, he was taken by helicopter to Salzburg State Hospital. The man suffered several injuries of an unknown nature. His friend was able to descend into the valley independently and returned to the starting point in Gosau at the beginning of the afternoon.
